The Fall of Berlin
"My brothers! We are the final defense of Berlin! We will prevent the Red Army or we will die!" Shouts an officer. "Yes sir!" Me and the other men yell. "Move!" He commands. Me and the dozens of other men charge towards cover, in an effort to stall the Russians. As I'm making my way to a building, I swear I can see an honor guard making his way through nearby buildings. After a moment, I reach my position. "Come on, you Russian bastards. Come on…" I whisper to myself. As I look around, I see an artillery cannon fire. I watch the round trail through the sky and obliterate a nearby building. Then the ground starts shaking. "Shit!" I yell as the ground beneath me caves in.
I wake up and look around. Not much is visible. "Damn. I'm in the metro." I get up and pick up my rifle. I cycle the bolt and see that a round was fired . "Must've gone off when I fell." I get up walk around. All the lights are out. "Power must have been knocked out." I say. I turn on my flashlight and see something move across the metro. I attach it to my harness and ready my rifle. I move in the direction of the movement. I hear a buzzing to my left and look over. I'm met by a mutilated corpse of a soldier. Probably no older than 16. "Poor bastard." I say, reaching for his tags. Before I grab them I stop myself. "It could be a trap. But what killed him? The metro has been clear for a while." Then I hear a faint click behind me. "Back away from the corpse, and turn around." I follow the directions the voice gave me. I turn to see a soldier pointing his rifle at me. I can't see his face, but his accent and outline show him to be in the Wehrmacht. "Oh, it's one of you. Follow me, the rest of my squad is up ahead." He says, already moving ahead. "Why are you down here?" I ask. "Scouts. We're marking places for the sappers to hit." He responds. "Wilhelm!" another soldier yells. "Who's that?" He asks. "One of those last ditch units." He yells back. "Hey, we found a tunnel. You want to check it out?" He asks, still yelling. "Yeah. Where's Fritz? Doesn't he have the flamethrower?" Wilhelm says, as we finally reach the squad. "He's over there. He's refilling the tanks." He answers. "Alright. I want him to take point. Then I want this one two go behind him." He says, gesturing to me. "Afternoon, Wilhelm." Fritz says, slight smile on his face. "You hear your orders?" Wilhelm says. "Yes sir." He says. With that, he prepares his flamethrower and moves to the tunnel opening.
"Hey kid, want to see something cool?" Fritz asks me. "Sure." I responded. Before I realize it, the deafening roar of the flamethrower fills the tunnel. We push up the into tunnel until we hit an exit. "Ahh. Feels good to be out of that cramped space." Fritz says, stretching in an exaggerated manner. "Where are we? I ask. "Dunno. All of you, turn on your lights. I can't see anything up here." He says. "Understood." Wilhelm says. The lights flood the room. We're surrounded be white walled room smelling of medical equipment and…something else. "Anyone else smell that?" I ask. "Blood." Wilhelm says, quietly. As he finishes, a loud rumbling can be heard as the tunnel behind us collapses, crushing one of the soldiers. "Shit!" Wilhelm yells. "Sir, we aren't getting out that way now." Fritz says, humorous nature seemingly gone. "I know that." Wilhelm says. "You, and you, I want you to scout fir some sort of exit." He says, point at me and another soldier. The other soldier an myself begin scouting the building, looking for a way out. After a few minutes, with no success, we both hear something. "Shh." The soldier with me says. "Do you hear that?" He whispers. I hear what sounds like footsteps but significantly heavier. "Yea. But I think it would be better if we go the other way." I whisper. "You're right." He says. We turn and move in the opposite direction of the footsteps. We enter a room, with a huge cage on the far side of the room. "What happened here?" I ask, not expecting an answer. "I don't know. Looks like something broke out of this cage." The other soldier says. "Wait, look in there. Holy shit!" I yell-whisper. On the inside of the age, lay dozens of mutilated skeletons, blood stains line with entire cage, and pieces of flesh lay on the floor. I look over to my partner and before I can say anything I see a hand laying on his shoulder.
The hand is pale, with incredibly long claws. He looks to his shoulder and before he can yell, a loud deafening roar kills the silence of the room, and another set of claws rip through his back, exposing themselves on the outside of his chest. I fire a round at where I think the creatures head is, and it doesn't even flinch. While it's focused on killing my partner, I run out of the room, back the way we came. After getting back to the rest of the squad, I stand for a moment trying to catch my breath. "What happened?! Where's Henrich?!" He says. "Something got him!" I say, adrenaline still pumping through my veins. "What do you mean?!?" He questions. "I don't know! All I saw was a pale hand with long claws!" I shout. Wilhelm goes silent, the color draining from his face. "It's back." He says. "What's back?" Everyone else asks at once. "Satan."
"What?" Everyone asks him at once. "You heard me!" He shouts, angered. "When I was in Russia, almost my entire squad was killed by that….that thing." He explains, sorrow filling his voice. "Including my brother. He stayed back in an effort to kill it. He failed." Wilhelm says. Me, Fritz, and the others look at him and back at each other. "We have to kill it." He says. "I have an idea."
He walks over to the exposed arm of the soldier who was crushed earlier. He steps on it, and pulls, breaking the bone. Then he pulls out his knife and cuts it off. He picks it up and walks to the hallway and lies it down. "Wilhelm, what are you doing?" I ask. He looks over to me. "Killing this thing." He says. Then he lays down an antitank mine. "If this doesn't kill it, nothing will." We walk back to the main room, and Wilhelm tells his squad the plan. "Wait. I hear something." Fritz says. Then a blast tears through the hall. Me and Wilhelm drop to the ground. The rest of the squad doesn't react fast enough. The shrapnel and debris tear them apart. Fritz, and the others fall to the ground, their bodies limp. "Fuck!" We yell in unison. We jump up, and run to the hall. It was empty. Not even an piece of bone or flesh. Wilhelm drops to his knees. "It didn't work. God damn you!" Then we heart something coming from behind us. We both whip around and open fire. Wilhelm pulls out a grenade, primes it and throws it at the beast. It lands in its mouth and detonates. It kills the beast, but the shrapnel tears through it, striking Wilhelm. He falls to the floor, coughing up blood. "It's dead. I killed it. Mother, father, brother. I'm coming…." His voice drifts off as he dies. I reach for my rifle, and realize my hand is gone. The nerves and flesh dangling off of my wrist. When I go to stand, the pain is unbearable and I collapse. A door opens nearby and I look over. Five men walk in. One with a flamethrower. They walk over to me and the corpses around me. The one with the flamethrower ignites his fuel. Then he starts burning the corpses. Another loads a pistol. "I'm sorry." He says. Then fires.
